Marnie disguises Anna to get her into the party. Marnie invites Anna to a party at the mansion, filled with guests. The two agree to keep their meeting secret and they meet again on the next evening. On the night of the Tanabata festival, Anna gets into an argument and runs away to the mansion across the marsh where she meets Marnie, the blonde girl. Starting that night, Anna dreams of seeing a blonde girl in the mansion. When she returns to the Oiwa's, Setsu tells her that the mansion used to be a vacation home for some foreigners, but that it has been empty for a long time. She looks around, finding it familiar, but gets trapped there by the rising tide until she is found by Toichi, a taciturn old fisherman, who brings her back to the pier with his rowboat. Yoriko discusses with Anna’s doctor about her recently withdrawn attitude and her parents decide to send her to spend the summer with Setsu and Kiyomasa Oiwa, relatives of Yoriko, in a rural, seaside town where the air is clear, located between Kushiro and Nemuro.Īnna sees an abandoned mansion across a salt marsh and goes to investigate it. One day at school, she collapses from an asthma attack. I've read the plot synopsis of this film, so I know the plot and the plot twist involving one of the main characters, and while this is not usually a type of film that I would want to see, the film's theme seems to share some similarities with Inside Out.Anna Sasaki is an introverted 12-year-old girl living in Sapporo with foster parents, Yoriko and her husband. This also got me thinking about a Studio Ghibli film from a similar time period When Marnie Was There. I've even declared this film as one of the greatest films of all time in ranks of Citizen Kane and I still find it absolutely insulting that this wasn't even nominated for Best Picture. You see, it could be argued that characters like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear and events that they go through aren't actually real, but are more like metaphors of Riley growing up in a whole new environment. Literally everything about the film was absolutely outstanding, or at least comes very close to it, from animation (duh), music, story, characters, voice acting, message, themes, you name it!Īnd the best thing about this is that this is the only Pixar film that has the down-to-earth tone as this is the first and only time when Pixar uses a metaphorical twist instead of a fantasy twist that it typically uses. As a lifelong Pixar fan, I think it might be THE best film that the studio has ever made and also an incredibly unique film, even by Pixar standards. Here's a bit of my background - I have a humongous respect and admiration for Pixar Animation Studios' 2015 film Inside Out. A fan-run "guidepost" site for Studio Ghibli Posts containing spoilers without using the above method ( except in clearly labelled threads) should be reported.
